When a company needs help with Google Ads, the choice is often framed as freelancer versus agency. The better question is what level of expertise, attention and operating support the business actually needs.
When a freelancer can be the better fit
A senior Google Ads freelancer can be a strong choice when you want direct access to the person making the strategy and optimisation decisions. This can work well for founder-led businesses, lean marketing teams and companies that already have design, analytics or sales resources.
When an agency makes more sense
An agency can make sense when an account needs several specialist functions at the same time, such as creative production, media buying, analytics, development and account management. The trade-off can be more layers between the client and the person operating the account.
What to evaluate before hiring
Look beyond the label. Ask who will actually operate the account, how decisions are made, how experiments are prioritised, what reporting includes, how conversion quality is measured and what happens when performance drops.
Experience should be measurable
A credible operator should be able to explain the budgets, markets, business models and outcomes they have worked with. Case studies are more useful when they explain the problem, intervention and measurable result instead of presenting a collection of platform screenshots.
The real decision
If you need senior strategy and hands-on execution without unnecessary layers, a senior freelancer may be the right model. If you need a broad team of specialists and high-volume production, an agency may be the better model. The right choice is the one that matches the complexity of the growth problem.
For paid media, the person or team you hire should be accountable for the business outcome, not simply the number of campaigns launched.
